Based on what we know and your information on this site, my Father Clyde Burgard was a Sergeant Major in the 41st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized in the 11th Armored Division. He was at the Bulge and was in the first group that got to Mauthausen Concentration Camp on May 5, 1945. We are visiting both of those locations for the 80th anniversary in September. Is there any information that can be shared that might confirm or add to this? Thank you.

I was looking for my namesake (Chester Doyle Wilkins) and arrived here. He would have been my great uncle. Looks like someone had adopted his grave and his daughter Joyce has been here before. Chester's brother, Ernest, is my grandfather. May they both Rest in Peace.

Hello, everyone. I have a few pictures to post of my Grandfather Robert "Neal" Bearden served in US ARMY World War II in the 11th armored division of Patton's 3rd army "Thunderbolts".
I am blessed to have stumbled over this website that keeps our family member's legacy alive. And like many of you, my grandfather did not talk about it or share many stories.
I just wanted to help keep some soldier's memories alive by sharing the few photos I had with others.

I'm looking for a copy of the book by Rae Dalton Hight "Voices of WW II Veterans". It is about 20 veterans of the Pacific NW. My Dad, also Walter White was in the 11th AB at the end of the war. He had a nazi flag with a bunch of GI's names and hometowns on it, most of whom were from the Pacific NW. Any info much appreciated. Many Thanks, WW

I have a photo of a danceband, it says Bullwaggoners and men in uniform, my dad was attached to the 11 th Armoured div briefly sometime during 39/45.
It was taken by a photographic company in Malton near Yorkshire on the music podiums are the numbers S3 or 83. Over two triangles.
I presume BULL is the clue, as in The nickname of the Regiment?
I can post photo if relevant

My grandfather Ellwood Harms was in the 55th AIB Unit B of the 11th. I have a picture of the unit before they went to Europe. It's too big for this site apparently so can email anybody who is curious. His paperwork said he entered the service at Camp Lee VA but I can't find records the 55th/11th was there. The picture could be from California according to my mother as I think he was there before departing consistent with records of the 55th/11th leaving. Still trying to hunt down somebody who had a family member in the 55th AIB and his company in particular

My oldest brother, Lawrence G. Mewhorter was a tank commander in the 42nd tank battalion, Company D. His was the lead tank attacked by the Germans on the night of March 7th, 1945. He died 5 days before my 6th birthday, and in the last letter he wrote on March 5th he was wishing my a happy birthday. I am now 83 years old but still have ALL of the many letters that Larry wrote home after entering the Army in 1943.
Is there any history center that would like such a collection of such letters? I also have a few photos.

(762) I found my step dad's "Enlisted Record and Report of Separation Honorable Discharge" today. He was apparently severely wounded, during the Battle of the Bulge, on Jan 1, 1945 near Rechrival and was honorably discharged from a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17th, 1945. He served in the 11th Armored Division, Company C or the 42nd Tank Battalion. He was the only survivor of his tank crew and was awarded EAME Theater Service Medal with Bronze Battle Star and a Purple Heart. I was wondering how I might go about finding more info on his company and even if possible his tank crew and where they might have been buried. Thanks for any ideas you might have.

Some years ago, when I was in middle school, I acquired a vintage typewriter still in its original case. Stenciled on the case was the name "J.H. Myers" and on a paper tag inside was the same name, along with a string of numbers, the location "Goffs, California", and the key words: "56th Armd Engr Bn". Now 20 years old, I've begun to take real interest in finding out anything I can about this man, as well as determine if he is still alive or has any next of kin, on the off chance that they might desire to have this item returned to the family, or if not, that I might be able to better appreciate what he did in service of the country.

All,

I have done about two years of research on the 778th Tank Battalion, Company C in particular. My grandfather was in the company. Several members on here and several family members have contacted me about their relatives. If anyone so desires, I have stories, tributes, and excerpts from official reports about the unit on my Facebook page. Please come read the stories of these heroes, and if you know anyone who was in the 778th Tank Battalion, I'd like to honor them, whether they were in Company C or not. Thank you.

All the Best,

Hi everyone, i am the great niece of a veteran that fought in the 11th armored division in WW2, PFC John Melker, he received the ETO Ribbon and purple heart. I am asking if anyone knows if there is a photograph of him. He was born 1923 and enlisted in the army in 1943 and was discharged in 1945. He died in a mysterious house fire in 1971 in Johnstown Pennsylvania. He never had any children. I have been searching every night for just one photograph of him to remember him and I can't find one. Can anyone please help me find a photograph of his so I can share with my family and to hang on our wall. I so dearly wish to just know what he looked like..Thank you all so very much..

My father was with the 133rd Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion. He was Technical Sergeant 4th Class, Ervin "Paul" Schroeder. I've come to this site often over the years to look at the various offerings, and I just wanted to offer my compliments. The division is often overlooked in the history of 3rd Army's campaign in the ETO. I was fortunate enough to visit Bastogne in December 2016, and I did some map reconnaissance, and realized the house we had rented was right in the 11th AD's area of operations. It was amazing to see the battlefield the ways those guys saw it - frozen, yet there was water flowing everywhere under the snow. Dad was evacuated in January or February 1945 with severe frostbite on both legs. He managed to talk the doc in to not amputating his legs, but he did not like the cold after that! Just thought I would share.

Hi, everyone. My father was Lt. Aaron Bernstein of the 491st. He's the author of BATTERY ADJUST, the unit's history booklet. I'm now living in Belgium and after visiting Bastogne and the War Museum there yesterday, I am really interested in following in his footsteps and seeing the places where he fought in WWII. Does anyone have a copy that they can photocopy and email me? I'd really appreciate it. Oh, and if anyone is coming to Belgium for the 75th anniversary, let me know. Thanks.

My wife and I recently went to Washington, DC for the first time and we went to the Holocaust Museum. I found a pin in the souvenir shop that matched the patch on my dad's army uniform and this told me that my dad served with the 11th armored division. I am researching to find out his experience in WW2 since my dad did not talk about it. He past away in 1986 and owned a Chinese/American restaurant.

(734) My great grandfather’s brother, Albert Novey, was in the 11th division’s 21st armored infantry battalion, A company. He died in the Battle of the Bulge during the early days of 1945, although my family has never been able to find out much more about his service than where he is buried. I am involved with an oral history interview project for Veterans, and I have it as one of my goals to locate and talk to a member of his company or battalion who may still be living in the upper midwest, specifically Wisconsin. I would appreciate any leads as to someone from this unit that I could talk to and possibly interview.
Thank you 11th division veterans so much for your service, and thank you for any information you could send my way.
Sincerely,
Adam Novey

(731) It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of my father, Raymond H. Lumry. He passed quietly February 14, 2018 at his home in Dallas, Texas. He was bright, mobile and still loving life at the age of 101 and 6 months at the time of his death.

He was a proud member of your association and spoke fondly of his service in the Division during WWII. He continued to serve his country for 26 years retiring after serving as Secretary of the Artillery and Missle School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma in June, 1964.

My dad, Carleton Scott from Ohio was in the 63rd Armored Infantry Battalion. He drove a half-track, was responsible for three radios on that half-track, and was the lead drive for the 11th Armored Division head quarters. Is there any way or any record indicating if or what Company he was in? I am looking at the original Morning Reports and researching other entries on the Internet. It appears that the 63rd had three companies but were not always under the same command. Thank you for any help.

My father, 2Lt. Peder H. Espeseth, served in Company D, 42nd Tank Batallion of the 11th Armored. Dad died in 1991. I recall several of his war stories, and especially remember him speaking fondly of his Captain, George "Bucko" Warriner, who was killed instantly in their first battle in Belgium. My name is Anthony Sterlacci. My grandfather was Tech Sgt. Thomas
Sterlacci. He served with the 11th armored during ww2. I am trying to
find out what type of a tank he drove.

He drove a sherman for the 41st Batallion company A commander. I heard
he drove a sherman but he said that towards the end of the war that "we"
I dont know if this is shermans in general or his tank specifically) got
a 90mm cannon.

I now suspect that he actually drove a, m10 (or) m18 then M36 tank
destroyer. This was supported by another story my Aunt heard that my
grandfather drove a tank destroyer.

This brings be to my question. Is there a way to directly look up what
tank/ tank destroyer he drove?

Thank You

Hello 11th Armored Division Members,

I think my grandfather was captured by your Division as a POW.
It was on the 11th or 12th April 1945 in a town called "Staffelstein" next to "Coburg" and "Bamberg".
Are there some documents which german Wehrmacht-units were captured by the US or something like that? Are there maybe more pictures from the time of 11th or 12th of April 1945?

The unit could be the 41th tank company, because they were capturing Coburg.

Best regards

(699) Do you have a connection with the 55th Armored Infantry Battalion? I am writing a book for Regan Arts, to be distributed by Simon & Schuster, about my parents' wartime correspondence. My father was Hyman I. Schulman, who served in that battalion (Company A, CCR) and later became a chaplain's assistant. Whether you knew him personally or just served in his vicinity, I'd appreciate knowing about your experience (or that of your loved one). Please write me at ohrogerchester@gmail.com

(698) Richard “Dick” McCoy, born 31 Aug 1921, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Alliance Center for Health Care where he lived in skilled nursing since October 5th, 2015, at the age of 94. Dick had adjusted from his independent living to skilled nursing during this time while also suffering numerous physical setbacks. He succumbed to these on Saturday and passed into the presence of the Lord, his faith sustaining him into his very last breath. He is survived by two sons, Jim and Bill.

Dick McCoy was born in Marvell, Arkansas, the oldest of three sons to Finis and Lucy McCoy. He grew up in Little Rock Arkansas and enlisted in the United States Army war effort in 1941 as a Private, making the rank of 1st Sergeant within two years. He was commissioned to the Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry and subsequently transferred into the Armor Branch. He deployed into Europe arriving at Cherbourg, France, in December 1944 with the 44th Tank Battalion, the 11th Armored Division, of the 3rd US Army and was thrust into combat in the now infamous Battle of the Bulge, as part of Gen Patton’s relief Armor columns, and follow-on operations in Europe until the cessation of combat operations in the summer of 1945. During the war he was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

Dick and Jo-Rean (Griggs) McCoy were married just after World War II. Their early marriage was filled with the excitement of Company Command where Dick Commanded the Delta Company, 3rd Infantry, the Tomb Guard, at Arlington National Cemetery. After his command assignment, he deployed again to combat in Korea for two years as part of the Army’s Intervention Campaigns in Korea during 1950-1951 advising the Korean Army’s Combat Operations while his young bride stayed at home with their young son. Returning home, Dick was assigned as an instructor at the Armor School, and graduated from the Army’s Command & General Staff College. He worked at Operations, US Army Europe Headquarters and afterwards took Command of the 3rd Squadron, 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, from 1961-1963. He was afterwards promoted to Colonel and retired from active duty in 1969 with 28 years of service. His few are known as the “Mustang Colonels” who enlisted and rose to that rank without college education. He graduated from the University of Maryland while stationed at Pentagon G4, and earned his MBA at Rollins College, Winter Park, Maryland in his retirement.

His life was shaped by many influences, the greatest of which was the death of his oldest son Donnie, who died as a young boy of nine, in the Army’s Heidelberg Hospital in Germany, in 1958. This shook Dad greater than any of his military operations to date. Dedicating his life to his faith in Christ, Dick began on his Christian journey with the same dedication as he had given to his military career. He became an active member of the Officer’s Christian Fellowship. His wife Jo was engaged along with him in Army Chapel programs helping to shape the faith of many military families and children at Army installations where they lived. For years growing up in the Army, both sons Jim and Bill were exposed to military officers and their spouses having Bible Studies in their home. Dick led his family in faith and without any formal education than self-study, taught Sunday School and became an Elder in the First Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Orlando, Florida. He also began a Bible Study in his home in Deltona, Florida, which eventually grew into the current Deltona Alliance Church.

During Retirement, Dick and Jo were active both in the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church and in the Gideon’s International. Dick spent the past 15 years of his life living in Deland, FL, where he continued his leadership as President of the Gideon Camp. He and his camp served at the County Jail where during this period they logged over 25,000 prayers of faith by inmates. Dick was always engaged in his work of faith until health failed him and he curtailed his role due to health at the age of 92. He is survived by his two sons; Jim and spouse Nancy from Tennessee, and Bill and spouse Carol from South Carolina, and by five grandchildren, Nathan and Joel, Ian & spouse Liz, Chad and spouse Jess, and Brenna and spouse Victor. Eight Great Grandchildren follow from these parents.
He will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, where his wife Jo Rean is currently buried and where he once Commanded as a young Captain.

Condolences may be sent to 50 Veranda Lane, Blythewood, SC 29016

Hello 11th Armored Division Members,

My father Milo Jr was in the 11th Armored Division and was injured on May 5th, 1945 near Linz, Austria. My Dad has long passed and never liked to speak too much about the war. Does anyone have any details of the injury and the occurrences that you could share with me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Milo Beman III

My father, John (Jack) Gaustad was an officer in the 11th A.D. He rarely talked about the war. He passed and went to Arlington a few years ago at age 92. Stayed in the Army for 32 years. I know he had a Bronze Star, Silver star and Purple Heart, but don't know the details. I found this site looking for the history of the 11th A.D. and to see if he was in it. Not much luck on him but plenty of history. Thanks!

(691) Wish I would have found this site while he was still alive. My dad was a member of a small group of soldiers that liberated the Mauthhausen Concentration camp. His name was Homer E. Brown and he was a PVT. in the 11th armored at the time.

I have photos taken by my father-in-law, John Shaughnessy, a soldier from the 11th Armored Division. These names are on the back of them:

Joe Buck Trevaskis
Doening
Him
Altman
Johnson
Schertz
Heagle
Schertz
Laurence Mac Donald

The spelling may not be quite right on a few of these.

My father was from Toledo, Ohio and stayed in Gmunden Austria after the war at a recreation center. I remember pictures of a beautiful dance club with a band in front of a big picture window. Don't know what happened to these pictures. Do you have any of this rec. center? Thanks

My uncle Joseph Beck died Sunday 10/11/15 at the age of 94.
He was with the 11th Div at the battle of the bulge. Don't know what other actins he was involved in as he didn't talk about his experiences.

Looking for info on Frederick (Mac) F. McCarthy. 41st tank battalion, company D. Mac enlisted at the age of 16 or 17 (lied about his age). He was from New York and moved to Washington state after the war, then ended up in Wisconsin. He was good friends with Manley Boss (Florida) and they are the ones who wrote the diary on this page under OUR HISTORY -> THUNDERBOLT UNIT HISTORY ->41st Tank Battalion, Company D, Combat Diary. I believe he made his way up to a Tank Commander, but am not positive until I can confirm with my dad. I was Mac's first grandson and am from Madison, WI and currently live in Minneapolis, MN. I Was too young to discuss much about the war with my grandfather who passed away about a decade ago. My dad is knowledgeable about his father's war efforts, but I would like to hear more info / any stories anybody may have. Thank you

May I ask if a photo exists of either the Fi 156 (or indeed the pilot and his passenger) which landed at Cham during the evening of 23 April 1945 ? The pilot was a gentleman called Heinz Lex who was flying from Berlin to South Germany to rejoin his unit at Ainring.

I'd welcome hearing from anyone with anything on this incident.

To Joe Carey, son of Capt Carey of the 490th AFA.....several years ago,you posted a picture of you Dad and 3 Lts that you invited to dinner in New York while awaiting deployment to England from Camp Dix. The Lt on your Dads immediate left in the picture is Lt. John H Cunningham, KIA 5 Jan in the Battle of the Bulge. He is from a distinguished family from Natchitoches, Louisiana. His youngest son, Dr. Gary Cunningham(whom he never got to see)is the Past Chairman of the Dept of OB/Gyn, University of Texas, HSC-Dallas Texas.
