Hello,

My Brother Jack Loder was in your Outfit. In reading the history of Company A 56 Armored Engineer Battalion seeing names like Gray, Buch, and the twins reminded me of the many times that Jack spoke of those guys and how much they ment to him. Jack passed away in 1992 he was not only my Brother but my best friend.

Thanks

Max Loder

My father, Merritt Johnson, was a Captain and an Intelligence Officer in the 63rd Armored Infantry Battalion in Belgium, France, and Germany. I recently have been reading his letters home during that period, and have been learning a lot about his time there. I would like to hear from any one who may have known him during that time. You are all heroes to me!

It's with sadness that I report my father, Hermen Neff of Sutersville, PA, passed away on Saturday, 18Sep04. Hermen was a staff sergeant and tank commander in company F, 41st Cav. He was awarded the bronze star for action during task force Greene's drive on Houffalize the night and morning of January 15/16, 1945. His action is described in General Greene's summary of this historic link up with the 1st Army that resides on the 11th AD website.

To all surviving "Thunderbolt" progeny: we currently reside in southern California and would love to hear from any surviving members (or their offspring) who might have served with our father. Our father was Pete C. Ontiveros and he served with the 21st inf. bat., 151st Signal Company. He rec'd a purple heart and bronze star in Dec. 1945 and we would enjoy hearing some of the details or recollections from his former "Buddies."

Hello!

May I introduce Myself? My name is Norbert and I am doing some researches on local history events of the area I'm living since late 1993 - escpecially under the focus of airwar. Nonetheless some sad stories of two villages around here (in spring 1945) managed the ignition for some serious overlooksover the fence of My favourite field of research.

The following short descripition may show what I am looking for:

On April 2nd 1945 a fierce battle between retreating units of 6. SS Gebirgsdivision Nord and US units took place in the vicintiy of Waechtersbach, destroying a lot of housings of the villages named Waldensberg and Leisenwald.

Anyone is able to confirm that the 11th was involved in this strange battle?

Every hint, wink, comment are as well appreciated as - perhaps - some photographs.

Thanks a lot and kind regards from Germany

Norbert Neuser

My father was with the Thunderbolts from the beginning with 41st Calvary Recon SQuadron mechanized as a Sgt Tank Driver. Reading the Thunderbolt magazine as a child and remembering him and his buddies attending a convention in Cherry Hill New Jersey has remained an indelible thought, especially playing afrmy with his old uniforms. Fortunately, I love the water and the Navy. He was from Philly and he ofter commented about one of his old buddies from the Ozarks calling him around the Christmas holidays. If anyone remembers Tom Bliss, SGT, 11th/41st Calvary, would like to hear from ya. I am in the phone book.

I have an old British postcard written 2 November 1944 from someone in Co. A 22th Bn APO 261. Card is stamped US Postal Services APO261. The details of the person (first name Harold) look like P.A.C.H. Kirw 32572831. He was writing to his sweetheart Miss Ruthie Baccher in New York. Can anyone tell me how I can confirm the details about Harold and where he might have been in the UK when the card was written please?

I was reading through the site and noticed that the 128th AAA was attached to the 11th Armored Division for a short time during World War 2. My grandfather served with the 128th and I was hoping that I might get some information pertaining to his time attached to the 11th.

I was also wondering if any former soldiers of the 11th published their personal memoirs and if someone may know I how I go about obtaining copies. I can be reached at:

My uncle was Cpl. Andrew Bobela who served in the 41st Tank Battalion, Company B. He was killed in action on Aug 24, 1945 in Regen, Germany when a bazooka hit his tank. His brother Michael, who also served in the Army, accompanied his body home to the US. Andrew received the bronze star and was buried with honors in New Jersey.

My father Joseph along with another of his brothers, John and their sister Helen proudly served this country in the War. In total, 5 Bobela's were in service at the same time.

I've been researching my family history and came across this website. I was so proud to read about my uncle and the many others who so devoutly served their country and defended freedom. You are all truly courageous.

If anyone remembers my uncle Andrew, please feel free to contact me through email. I would love to hear from someone who served with him.

My uncle, Alan Pifer, was a 2nd Lt. and Transportation Officer in the Service Company of the 22nd Tank Battalion in the 11th. 15 years ago he wrote a 50-page essay of his experiences in the 11th, from California to Austria. He is still alive, living in Vermont, and I happened to see him 2 days ago, and he gave me permission to pass on his story to any person or organization that might be interested in it. It is very well written, and really gives a graphic sense of what it was like to be in the lower echelons where you have no idea what's happening anywhere else. Is there any part of this website where such documents can be made available?

Also, if anyone reading this was in his Service Company and remembers him, I would be happy to put you in touch, just send me an email. Also, if anyone reading this wants a copy of his essay, let me know. I only have a hard copy, but intend to find some way to scan it into my computer soon.

I have 4 tickets to attend the WWII Memorial Dedication Ceremony in Washington DC on May 29, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. However, I'm unable to go & thought it would be nice to offer them to someone who fought alongside my grandfather.

If anyone is interested in having these 4 free tickets, I can send them to you Fed-Ex. The seats are in Section 2, which is right by the Reflecting Pool. Email me at kat_christ@yahoo.com.

Thank you,
Katherine Christ

My father, Murray Korn (491st Armored Field Artillery of the 11th Armored Division) will be in Washington, DC for the inauguration of the WWII memorial over Memorial Day weekend, 2004. He is not aware of any reunion plans during that weekend for the 11th Armored Division). Will any of his buddies from those days also be in Washington for the celebration? It would be a wonderful experience for him to be able to catch up with you. He is not terribly computer literate, so I am writing this note on his behalf. Thanks for your responses. I am pleased to find you web site. I was born in Abilene Tx (1939) and my father managed the Abilene State Park near Camp Barkeley during the war. I remember the soldiers from the camp coming to the park for R&R after maneuvers. They would park their jeep, tanks, halftracks, ect. in an area adjacent the park pavilion. On one such occasion my brother, who was 6 years older than I, were watching the convoy roll by when a tank pulled up and a soldier stuck his head out of the hatch and ask us if we wanted a ride. I was really excited and wanted to go but my brother was somewhat shy and would not go and I could not go without him. Boy I would loved to have taken a ride in that tank!

When the soldiers came to the park my father let them in to the pool for free.
There was a dance pavilion with a Wurlitzer jukebox and the soldiers loved to come on weekends when they could and dance with the local teenage girls. My teenage sister pulled lifeguard duty at the pool.

Would love to hear from any Camp Barkeley vets that remember the State Park.

His name was SSGT. Harold E. Oliver and he died Jan. 1, 1945 around the area of Rechnval, Belgium, I think? If anyone knew him or has some pictures of him that they could send me I would greatly appricate it. I am very proud of the what he did and the sacrifice he and all of you made for us. As a veteran myself I would hate to let is memory faded away. So if anyone has any stories or information about his what he got his Bronze Star for or anything I would appreciate it. I have attached a picture of him.

smile I've missed it by one day but on 12 Apr 45 Pres FDR died and the Thunder- bolts were operating in the vicinity of KRONACH. I have been doing research on KRONACH for a number of years (I was stationed there in 1955-56) and would like to hear from anyone who has anecdotes about the town. The division was travelling mighty fast in those days so there might not be much memorable about KRONACH but units were there and also in WEISSENBRUNN and UNTERSTEINACH.

My grandfather, Richard Nelson, joined Co. B, 55AIB as a replacement in late January, 1945. If anyone recalls serving with him, it would be great to hear from you. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away several years ago. Understandably, he never said much about the war. I'm proud of him though, and am trying to piece together bits of his story for the family. If anyone has info about serving with him or in the 55th (that's not already posted on this great site), I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

ATTENTION 55TH AIB MEN!

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the 55th AIB's encampment and training in England in the Fall of 1944, I have organized a 10-day tour of Wiltshire and London for the men of the battalion and their families on September 7-16, 2004. The tour is hosted by Valor Tours, Ltd. of Sausalito, CA -- the provider of the 55th AIB's memorable tours to Belgium/Luxembourg and Germany/Austria in 2000. In conjunction with the tour, a plaque will be dedicated in Tisbury (the 55th AIB's HQ in Wiltshire) to the men of the battalion.

For more information on the England tour, contact Valor Tours at (800) 842-4504, or at info@valortours.com. For more information on the plaque, contact me at a55aib@yahoo.com.

Hello, I have been trying to locate information on my Grandfather. He was a Sgt in the 63rd AIB. He passed away a few years ago and I do not have any information on his service record or any information on him in general. I am trying to locate anyone who may have remembered him and can tell me anything about him. His name is Nicholas John Dietz. He served from November 1942 through December 12th 1945. He received an honorable discharge. I have his VA records, but the archives in St. Louis had a fire in the 80's and cannot locate his records. If anyone remembers him or anything about him I would greatly appreciate any information you could provide.
